CAM Institute of Design is pioneering the next generation of visual storytellers in Atlantic Canada with the launch of the Film Design Diploma – an intensive one-year program designed to do more than teach filmmaking. This unique one-year program not only equips learners with technical and creative skills but also prepares them for the future of work while strengthening the creative capacity and economic growth of the Saint John Community.
A Program Built for the Future of Media
Our comprehensive curriculum covers a wide range of skills which offers an end-to-end learning experience that mirrors real-world production environments. From scripting to camera operation and lighting, then sound, and professional editing, the curriculum is aligned with industry standards, instilling in students the confidence and competence to create polished productions across a variety of sectors, equipping them well for the challenges of the industry.
The program’s hands-on approach remains central to CAM’s identity. With small cohort sizes, studio-based training, and close industry partnerships, learners benefit from personalized mentorship and practical exposure that prepares them for high-demand roles in film, television, advertising, digital content creation, and corporate media. This experiential model ensures that students gain the confidence and ability to contribute immediately to the creative sector within the Saint John Community, Atlantic Canada and globally.

Developing Professionals, Not Just Technicians
While technical expertise is essential, CAM recognizes that success in the media industry demands much more. The Film Design Program places equal emphasis on developing soft skills such as client communication, creative pitching, teamwork, and project management. Students also explore the impact of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and examine how new tools are reshaping visual storytelling.
This holistic approach prepares graduates to adapt, innovate, and thrive in an industry that evolves rapidly- qualities that contribute significantly to the creative vitality of the Saint John Community.
Access to Industry-Grade Tools and Facilities
CAM’s commitment to excellence is reflected in the technology and tools available to learners. Students work with small and medium format cinema cameras, advanced lighting and grip systems, field recorders, and professional audio gear, including boom and lavalier microphones. For post-production, they are equipped with Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and tools for motion graphics, VFX, compositing, and color correction. These resources ensure that each student graduates with a portfolio that meets professional standards and resonates with employers.

A Pathway to Industry and a Catalyst for Community Growth
At its core, the Film Design Program is designed as a launchpad- creating direct pathways from education into meaningful employment and entrepreneurship. Graduates leave with tangible experience, strong portfolios, and connections that position them to succeed in Canada’s growing media and entertainment sectors.
The ripple effect of this talent pipeline will be felt throughout the Saint John Community and beyond. As students transition into professionals, they contribute fresh ideas, creative energy, and economic value to local industries. Their work has the potential to amplify the region’s cultural presence, attract new opportunities, and support the continued development of Saint John’s creative ecosystem.
